Location and Description
The site is located in Glasgow city centre and commands a strategic location on the eastern extent of Argyle Street within the cultural Merchant City quarter which has undergone significant regeneration over the past decade. Glasgow is a ‘walkable’ city and the site sits in close proximity to key public transport links notably Central train station which links Glasgow to London and Queen Street station links the city to Edinburgh. It is also close to the commercial district, main shopping areas and Glasgow Caledonian and Strathclyde University.
The site is located within the Central (Outstanding) Conservation Area designation and comprises an entire city block extending to 1.5 hectares (3.7 acres) comprising existing buildings, highways and open space. It is bounded to the south by Trongate, to the north by Wilson Street, to the west by Hutcheson Street, and to the east by Candleriggs. The site is naturally dissected north to south by Brunswick Street. The land-use use in the immediate area is mixed with residential, retail, office, bars and restaurants.
Vehicular and pedestrian access to the site is provided off Brunswick Street as it is not a main road and has an area of open parking spaces.
Nature of the work
The Contract works comprised the strip out and subsequent demolition a cluster of large derelict and vacant buildings on the Candleriggs site in line with the demolition site plan. The works also contained elements of façade retention together with Asbestos removal which had to be integrated sequenced and carried out to facilitate the Demolition works.
